First up Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu: The Vampyre. Herzog’s best frienemy Klaus Kinski stars in this very serious remake of the silent film Nosferatu. It seems to me that Herzog loves the source material and is making this movie in service to the original film. There is no ironic romantic vampires with abs to be seen in this one. Also check out the poster art! -

I remember The Blob being super 80’s and super gory. It’s a great remake of an incredible movie. A super 80’s update of Steve McQueen’s The Blob. I lump this movie in with other gory updates of really cool concepts like The Thing or The Fly. I would love to watch all three of these sometime as a 50’s remake body horror triple feature.
We will be watching this one on glorious VHS! -

All my Japanese Animated Horror film fans rejoice! The first ever animated selection in Feast history is the horror masterpiece Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. This is the ongoing saga of half-human half-vampire D. This was one of the most anticipated anime movies of the 2000’s because of the cult following of the original short feature film. For the sequel the creators got a huge budget that included money for a CGI department. The movie brilliantly blends traditional animation styles and revolutionary (at the time) computer generated. This film looks fucking rad and is incredibly creative with its various monsters and set pieces. Have I mentioned that I love this movie?! Even if you aren’t normally an anime fan, I think you’re gonna dig this one. -

What can I say about Ari Aster’s breakout horror film Hereditary(2018)? I always try to include a current horror film in this fest and the moment I left the theater I knew I was gonna show this one. Kinda like how I know I’m going to show his follow up film Midsommar next year. Ari has a unique voice and talent for showcasing raw human emotions in times of extreme distress. This film is shocking but I don’t feel preyed upon. It all happens in service of this horror tale that transcends its own conceit. Toni Collete is incredible in this movie and the superb directing gives her the tools to breathe real life into her matriarchal character. Truly not for the squeamish, Hereditary forces me to brace myself for another watch. -

Night of the Comet! I like imagining this movie starring Erin Gillis and Joanna Troutman Bergkoetter. It makes an already super fun movie about two valley girls and the apocalypse, even better. This is a new immediate classic for me! The movie is so funny and our leads are absolutely charming. Yay yay yay! -

Fuckin’ Tremors doooood! A throw back to 50’s Sci-Fi monster classics, but with great comedic timing and the raw charisma of its cast. We got Gross. We got Bacon. We got country legend and star of the tv show Reba... Reba! This movie is gross and incredibly fun and put Kevin Bacon back on the cultural map! Goddamn this movie rips! -

Ohhhh boy, this is right at the beginning of the Friday the 13th ripoffs that just rips on its own volition. Is it doin’ anything new? No! Is it fucking awesome? Yes! Madman Mars is on yer ass. This is movie also features the most important hot tub scene of yer life. Don’t go to sleep during this one, let’s do shots and watch the Madman do his work.
We’ll be watching this one on glorious VHS, where it belongs.
